Two Legends

I wanted to make an visual accompaniment for the poem Two Legends, written by Ted Hughes, that retains the dark and moody atmosphere of the original reading.
I initially wanted to make an animation for this project, but I found I couldn’t properly represent the poem in paper without making literal visual representations, such as crows, internal organs and eggs. I wanted to make the accompaniment abstract to prevent myself from merely retelling the story in a different medium.

I visited the natural reserve, Ebbor Gorge, a designated Area Outstanding Natural Beauty, and was inspired by the grey mist hung about in the air, dulling the greens and the browns of the undergrowth. Here I decided to make a film accompaniment for the Two Legends poem. I could see a lot of potential in the dead trees and bare rocks.

I’m extremely pleased with the outcome of this project because my video is severe, depressing, and desolate, but has a glimmer of hope at the very end where the viewer can breathe a sigh of relief.
